Milton Keynes Guide
Milton Keynes is a purpose-built "new town" founded in 1967 to help alleviate London's housing congestion, deliberately planned with a unique grid road system and an abundance of green spaces. While often subject to the stereotypical "concrete cows and roundabouts" perception, the area has a rich hidden history, including evidence of Neolithic and Roman settlements, and the critically important Bletchley Park, the top-secret centre of World War II Allied code-breaking.
Today, Milton Keynes has achieved city status and offers a contemporary lifestyle that perfectly balances its urban amenities with nature; approximately 25% of the urban area is parkland, with over 6,000 acres of green space managed by the Parks Trust, and a vast network of cycling and pedestrian paths known as "Redways".
"Note for Americans and other aliens: Milton Keynes is a new city approximately halfway between London and Birmingham. It was built to be modern, efficient, healthy, and, all in all, a pleasant place to live. Many Britons find this amusing."
